DEVELOPING BAY VIEWS IN MILL VALLEY
The objective was to orientate the residence toward the views, through a major expansion. Additionally, the home owners had outgrown the space and were yearning for a more upscale ambiance to the residence.
Initially the clients had asked Gary Jerabeck to develop a new patio and to do a kitchen remodel for their Mill Valley home. However, after evaluating the existing design, Gary approached them as to what he felt was the problem with the current structure. The property was a prime bay water front lot but from inside the home the views were lost. There was no relationship between the interior and exterior spaces.
The central premise of the new design was to make one feel as if they were floating on the bay. This entailed pushing out the entire rear of the structure; creating a separate family room, breakfast room and kitchen; adding more space in the living room; incorporating expansive windows and French doors and raising the rear garden area to create an outdoor terrace directly connected to the interior.
A timeless and classic style was created with the use of unique painted finishes, rift oak custom cabinetry, rich honed marbles with an inlaid back splash and new architectural moldings and detailing. While high end quality work was a prime focus of the design, the wonderful bay setting was to be a prominent player.
Although this 20 month project entailed maneuvering through the cumbersome waterfront permitting process, the final result was well worth the wait in developing this property to its full potential.
